This clay bell is shaped like a snake to celebrate the zodiac animal for 2025 and sits on a vibrant red hemp-woven mat. Clay bells have a rich history, dating back to the Jōmon period (c. 14,000–300 BC), and it is believed that their resonant ringing will summon deities while warding off evil spirits. Over time, they have evolved across Japan, serving as religious artifacts in shrines and temples, and as regional folk toys.
The Kansai region includes the second-most populated metropolitan area in Japan with its largest city Osaka. Kyoto and Nara, two of Japan’s former capital cities, are home to important temples and shrines and strongholds of intangible cultural heritage, such as the Kyoto textile weaving skills of Nishijin.
