This eco-friendly, reusable food wrap is made of 100% organic materials and is safe to use on food and with tableware. The wraps are made one by one, using a cotton sheet dyed with a mixture of jojoba oil and beeswax, which is known for its antibacterial and moisture retaining properties, helping the food wrapped inside to stay fresh. The beeswax is harvested together with honey produced by honeybees in Iwate Prefecture, then mixed with jojoba oil to increase the natural durability of the wrap. The wax coating ensures the wrap is waterproof, with the oil providing extra smoothness and preventing the wax from cracking.
The pattern of this food wrap is called umebachi-kikkō, and mixes two symbols; plum blossoms and tortoise shells. The hexagonal shape of the tortoise shell resembles beehives, to represent the beeswax used to make these food wraps, while the plum blossom symbolises hope and renewal.
