This book is a collection of the most compelling work produced by minä perhonen over the last twenty years. Minä perhonen has a distinct fusion of Scandinavian and Japanese sensibilities, derived from designer Minagawa Akira’s regular travels to the Nordic countries since his teenage years. The minimalistic and vibrant prints evoke the works of Alvar Aalto and Marimekko, as well as the patterns found in historical Japanese textiles.
The book combines new photography with archival images alongside the poetically written text, delicate illustrations and ideation sketches, presenting Minagawa’s subtle approach to design. Also included are critical essays by Susan Brown and Issey Miyake, providing insightful commentary on their ideas of minä perhonen.

Mingawa Akira is a Japanese fashion, textile and homeware designer who founded his brand minä in 1995 which developed to be minä perhonen in 2003. He has designed for Kvadrat, KLIPPAN and GINORI 1735 alongside creating illustrations for magazines and newspapers.
