Vermilion Crackled Yunomi

A tea cup with a crackle glaze highlighted with red pigment, from Tajimi City, Gifu Prefecture.

£38 per item

This tea cup has a distinctive pattern, an intricate network of fine lines created from a crackle glazing technique. This pattern is achieved when firing the ceramics, as the variation in the shrinkage rate between the body of clay and the surrounding glaze causes fine cracks to form on the surface. After the firing, a red pigment is applied to the cracks to highlight the intricate motif, leaving the tea cup with a subtle pink hue. This signature red pigment is known as sennichi-zuri, a name that is derived from the process of pulverizing the pigment into a fine powder over the course of 1000 days.
The details of this teacup have been meticulously designed, from the rounded form that follows the shape of the hand, to the weight of the cup, making pleasant to hold and use daily. Even the thickness of the walls has been optimized to make it comfortable to drink from.

Handwash only.
