Toshima Agricultural Cooperative

利島農業協同組合

Tsubaki (camelia japonica), has been a familiar flower throughout Japan's history with records of its cultivation dating back to the Jōmon period, 2,300 years ago. Tokyo's Toshima Island has been cultivating tsubaki for around 300 years, gaining protection for the island and its inhabitants from westerly winds. Today, with approximately 80 percent of its territory covered with tsubaki trees, Toshima Island is the largest producer of tsubaki seed oil in Japan.
