New Year, oshōgatsu, is a significant holiday in the Japanese calendar, a moment where families gather, eat osechi-ryōri (colourful, usually cold New Year dishes packed in jūbako, tiered boxes), reflect on the past year, and enjoy a few days of well-earned rest.
Some traditions revolve around welcoming toshigami (the Shinto deity of abundant harvest). This involves thoroughly cleaning the house, placing shimenawa at the entrance (rice straw decorations hung to signify where the deity has descended), and displaying kagami mochi (a stacked rice cake offering that serves as a dwelling place for the deity).
