An extension to the book White, 100 Whites reexplores the sensory and emotional responses to 100 different whites from designer Hara Kenya’s memory.
100 Whites is a written collection of 100 distinct shades of white drawn from the memory of designer Hara Kenya. While his earlier book, White, explored the cultural and conceptual significance of white in his work and within Japanese cultures, this volume offers a more tangible examination of the many forms white can take.
The title plays visually on the written character for ‘white’ appearing within the character for ‘hundred’. Inside, Hara reflects on the sensory and emotional responses evoked by different tones of white, from bones that express mortality, snow that muffles sound, and onigiri (rice balls) and the tactile preparation of ingredients by hand.
Kenya Hara is one of the leading graphic designers in Japan, holding multiple positions including those of Professor at Tokyo’s Musashino Art University, President of Nippon Design Center and Art Director of Muji.
