A conceptual book by designer Hara Kenya that explores the essence of the colour white and the idea of emptiness, both central to his design practice.
Although titled White, Hara Kenya describes this book as not being about colour in the conventional sense, but about exploring the essence of white. The concept is approached through both the aesthetics and material sensitivities of paper, as well as philosophical ideas of emptiness, framed through Japanese cultures and his perspective as a designer.
The narrative begins with Hara’s observation that the written character for ‘white’ is the radical component in the character meaning ‘emptiness’. This connection serves as the foundation for his reflections on white as a conceptual and structural principle in his design practice, not merely as a visual choice.
Kenya Hara is one of the leading graphic designers in Japan, holding multiple positions including those of Professor at Tokyo’s Musashino Art University, President of Nippon Design Center and Art Director of Muji.
