TOKYO ICON 有田焼プレート
An Arita porcelain plate with illustrated cultural symbols of Tokyo from the TOKYO ICON series.
This plate is part of TOKYO ICON, a series of 69 line-drawn icons representing Tokyo, rendered on Arita porcelain. Three different icons are illustrated in simple, stylised forms: sushi, sumo and a lantern bearing the word kaminarimon (lit. ‘Thunder Gate’), referring to the landmark at the entrance of Sensō-ji (Buddhist temple located in Asakusa). Together, they capture the spirit of the place through familiar cultural symbols.

This is Japan’s south-west region including the island of Kyūshū and the sub-tropical island chain of Okinawa. Kyūshū was an early centre of Japanese civilization, and offers many historic treasures, modern cities and volcanic natural beauty. It is home to the ports of Kagoshima, Nagasaki and Fukuoka, the porcelain manufacturing centre in Arita and the Tanegashima Space Center launch site.
