This book is a collection of 86 birds from Baien Kinpu, an illustrated encyclopaedia of flora and fauna from the Edo period (1603–1868). Produced by Mōri Baien, a scholar of herbal medicine and a samurai, the book introduces each bird with an explanation of its Japanese name, accompanied by a detailed depiction and references to Japanese literature. This richly detailed compilation reflects the appreciation of birds among people during the Edo period.
