The wrapping culture of Japan has developed across more than 1,000 years, and wrapping things in cloth is said to have already been a custom by the Nara period (710-794 CE). Furoshiki continue to be used in many ways, from binding precious objects as a means to protect them, to wrapping gifts decoratively, or to carry objects from place to place.
This furoshiki is crafted in Kyoto by skilled artisans using Japan’s first technique of dyeing each side of the fabric in different colours. This inventive method ensures that both sides of the furoshiki can be appreciated, whether it is wrapped or tied.
The design was created in collaboration with the Isa Monyō Research Institute, established by dyeing and weaving craft artist, Isa Kunio. Since the mid-1940s, the institute has been dedicated to creating monyō (patterns with cultural, historical, or religious symbolism) utilizing stencil dyeing techniques that have been passed down through generations.
This particular monyō features a pine motif, symbolizing longevity, making it an ideal gift for the older generation.

Handwashing recommended.
Iron with a cloth over the fabric.
