Photographed across Japan during the summer months, from riverbanks to hot-spring towns, these images of fireworks are presented in Kawauchi’s characteristic muted palette. The photographs capture not only the spectacle of fireworks displays, but also the surrounding atmosphere of seasonal gatherings and public spaces.

Kawauchi’s practice frequently focuses on everyday subjects, including carp, flowers and children, approached through close observation and attention to light, texture and temporality. Her work often explores themes of life, transience and mortality through images drawn from the natural world and daily experience.

Born in Shiga Prefecture, Kawauchi Rinko received the Kimura Ihei Award for the photobooks Utatane (dozing) and Hanabi (firework) in 2002. Her work has been exhibited internationally at institutions including Kunst Haus Wien and the Contemporary Art Museum Kumamoto.
