桧押し型 松竹梅
A press mould skilfully crafted from hinoki (Japanese cypress) in Nabari City, Mie Prefecture.
This hinoki (Japanese cypress) press mould is a tool for forming rice into the shapes of shochikubai, an auspicious motif of pine, bamboo and plum, symbolizing perseverance and resilience. These decorative shapes are often found in bento boxes or dishes for celebrations such as New Year. The mould is packed with rice after being wiped with water to prevent it any sticking. The connected shapes are pressed down to compact the rice, and, as the hinoki absorbs excess moisture, the formed shapes are easily released. This press mould is skilfully crafted in Nabari City, Mie Prefecture.
