平清水焼お茶碗
An expertly crafted rustic rice bowl from Yamagata Prefecture.
This rustic porcelain bowl is expertly handmade in Hirashimizu Village, Yamagata Prefecture. Made with iron-rich soil of the local area, the bowl features a stunning mix of blue and a dull copper-red colour, resembling the skin of a ripe pear. Its surface is further enhanced by the addition of red pine ash during firing, producing a beautiful matt glaze. Crafted by skilled craftspeople with over 200 years of pottery-making heritage, each cup is made individually, with a focus on craftsmanship rather than artistry, making it perfect for everyday use. The texture of the bowl is earthy and natural, adding to its charm. Not only is this bowl aesthetically pleasing, it also embodies Yamagata’s history and heritage.

Tōhoku consists of six prefectures located in the north-east of Honshu island. This region is known for its hot spring (onsen) resorts, colourful festivals, remote sacred mountains and harsh winters. In 2011, the devastating earthquake and tsunami hit the region hard; however, the massive efforts in reconstruction are proof of the people’s resilience. Urushi (lacquer) ware, ironware and the crafting of kokeshi dolls make up but a few of the local industries in this lesser-visited region of Japan.
