い草敷きパッド
An eco-friendly moisture absorbent mattress cover sheet made of igusa rush grass, grown in Kyūshū.
This mattress cover sheet is handmade of igusa (rush grass), a material which historically has been used for making tatami mats. Thinly woven using igusa grown in Kyūshū – Japan’s southernmost main island – this cover is highly moisture absorbent, and has a relaxing, fresh fragrance. Treated with essential oils extracted from Aomori hiba wood – a species of cypress native to Japan – it has enhanced antibacterial and deodorising properties. By avoiding the standard mud-dyeing process employed to dry regular igusa, the rushes used in this mattress cover retain smooth, dirt-resistant and chemical-free surfaces.

Tōhoku consists of six prefectures located in the north-east of Honshu island. This region is known for its hot spring (onsen) resorts, colourful festivals, remote sacred mountains and harsh winters. In 2011, the devastating earthquake and tsunami hit the region hard; however, the massive efforts in reconstruction are proof of the people’s resilience. Urushi (lacquer) ware, ironware and the crafting of kokeshi dolls make up but a few of the local industries in this lesser-visited region of Japan.
