The first comprehensive English-language survey of photographer Ishiuchi Miyako’s work.
Through photographs of apartment blocks, human scars, and the personal belongings of the deceased, Ishiuchi Miyako captures the passage of time as something almost tangible.
This publication traces the course of her practice over fifty years. It is organized into three sections – Town, Skin and Scars, and Things Left Behind – and includes series such as Yokosuka Story, 1·9·4·7, and Frida, alongside lesser-known works. The volume also features essays by the artist and an interview conducted by Lena Fritsch.
Ishiuchi Miyako is a Japanese photographer based in Gunma prefecture. She has received numerous awards, including the Kimura Ihei Award (1978), the Medal with Purple Ribbon (2013), and the Hasselblad Award (2014).
In 2005, she was selected as the representative artist for the Japan Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. Her work is held in collections worldwide.
