A comprehensive overview of the work of photographer Domon Ken, who advocated photographic realism and dedicated his career to documenting the lives and spirit of the Japanese people.
The volume brings together a significant body of work, including rare pre-war and wartime photographs, as well as major post-war series such as Children of Chikuho, Hiroshima, and Pilgrimage to Ancient Temples. The book contains a total of 369 photographs.
Ken Domon (1909–1990) was born in Yamagata Prefecture and began his career as a photojournalist. In the post-war period, he became a leading figure in Japanese photography, advocating “absolute snapshots without direction” and exerting a significant influence on the field.
He was awarded the Purple Ribbon Medal of Honour in 1973 and the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Fourth Class, in 1980. In 1981, The Mainichi Newspapers established the Domon Ken Award to recognize outstanding achievements in documentary and realist photography in Japan.
