An introduction to the photographer Suda Issei, whose work captures both past and contemporary aspects of Japan.
This book is an introduction to Suda Issei, who photographed moments of subtle surprise and curiosity found in everyday life. Though not overtly strange or unusual, these scenes are transformed through his distinctive perspective.
He studied at the Tokyo College of Photography, which produced many notable photographers, and developed his practice through travel and by walking through his hometown of Tokyo.
Suda Issei (1940–2019) was born in Tokyo. From 1967, he worked as the in-house photographer for Terayama Shūji’s experimental theatre group Tenjō Sajiki, before beginning his independent career. He received numerous honours, including the Domon Ken Award for Human Memory.
He was active in education, leading workshops, supporting younger photographers, and later serving as a professor in the Photography Department at Osaka University of Arts.
Simon Baker is the former director of the Maison Européenne de la Photographie.
