A square-topped uchiwa (hand fan), reinforced with recycled netting, made in Marugame, Kagawa Prefecture.
A distinctive feature of this uchiwa (hand fan) is the contrast between the finely crafted bamboo frame and the netting. Historically, Marugame uchiwa, known as shibu uchiwa, used this mesh structure to improve durability. In this version, the mesh is formed from recycled fishing nets as part of efforts to address marine pollution.
Uchiwaya Ryō is a workshop producing domestically made bamboo fans crafted by artisans. With a history spanning over 400 years,
Marugame uchiwa are known for their varied forms and patterns. Marugame, in Kagawa Prefecture, is responsible for around 90 percent of Japan’s uchiwa production. The craft is recognized as a Japanese Traditional Craft by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
