Over 110 recipes inspired by Japan’s konbini culture.
In Japan, the convenience store (known as konbini) is an essential part of everyday life. This book presents over 110 recipes inspired by foods commonly found in these stores, drawing on the chef-author’s experience, and explores the appeal of konbini cuisine through contextual narratives.
Convenience stores offer a wide range of products, including umbrellas, batteries, socks, cosmetics and stationery. Food and drink occupy a central position among these, from onigiri and sandwiches to deli-style dishes and soft, airy desserts, reflecting the diversity of konbini offerings.
Brendan Liew and Caryn Ng have spent over a decade travelling to Japan to explore, learn and experience local cultures and cuisine. In 2016, they founded the pop-up Japanese cafe Chotto in Melbourne, which has since closed.
Brendan studied Japanese cuisine in a range of settings, including the three-Michelin-starred RyuGin in Tokyo. He has also written other books on Tokyo.
