The oval chopsticks are handcrafted and lacquered in Wajima, Ishikawa Prefecture with a matte makiji finish.
These oval chopsticks are crafted from locally sourced Hiba wood and feature a matte makiji finish. Makiji is a lacquering technique in which a base coat of raw lacquer is applied before a layer of Wajima jinoko (fired diatomaceous earth sourced from Mt. Komine in Wajima City), which offers a non-slip grip and exceptional durability.
In ancient times, oval-shaped chopsticks were widely favoured but eventually fell out of production due to the labour-intensivity of the crafting process. Now their production has been revived at the request of the Ishikawa Prefecture Industrial Laboratory Trial Center. Each chopstick is shaped by a skilled craftsperson using a small plane before it is finished with makiji. The ergonomic oval design ensures a comfortable grip, while the lacquering process provides exceptional surface hardness, making the chopsticks ideal for everyday use.

Chūbu
The central Chūbu region is predominantly mountainous, home to the rugged Japan Alps with coasts on both the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean. The region's history has been shaped by its strategic position between the great cities of Kyoto and Tokyo with Nagoya at its heart. Niigata lies to the north while Mt Fuji can be found in the south in Shizuoka Prefecture.
