The box set of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is two hardback volumes of the manga written and illustrated by Miyazaki Hayao. The series is widely regarded as foundational to Studio Ghibli, the animation studio co-founded by Miyazaki, known for works including My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, and Howl’s Moving Castle.
The narrative is set a 1,000 years after a global war known as the Seven Days of Fire, which led to the collapse of industrial civilisation. It follows Nausicaä, the princess of the Valley of the Wind, as she becomes embroiled in a conflict between kingdoms on a post-apocalyptic Earth with a toxic ecosystem. With themes of environmental fragility and human survival, the manga has captured the imagination of many readers throughout the years. The story was partially adapted into an animated film in 1984, based on the early sections of the series.
Miyazaki Hayao is an award-winning animation director and co-founder of Studio Ghibli. His notable works include My Neighbour Totoro, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. His films explore themes of environmentalism, the relationship between humanity and technology, and the significance of friendship and family, with protagonists typically portrayed as girls or women.
