This book is part of a six-book series that follows 20 years of work by esteemed textile design firm, NUNO. Each book takes for its title a Japanese onomatopoeic word that evokes a particular quality of textiles. A central text explains the essence of the onomatopoeia and its connection to textiles, with an accompanying essay by a specialist from outside the textile industry exploring abstract connections and broader concepts. Additionally, the book explores the inspiration, technologies and processes that contribute towards textile production.
Boro boro in the title of Boro Boro: Cruel and Unusual Treatment of Fabrics, is an onomatopoeia that describes the quality of being worn and might be applied to things ragged or tattered. This book follows the experimental approach of NUNO to produce this quality through intricate processes of lamination, felting and chemical lacework. The dynamic photography captures the varied textures that express fragility in the frayed fabric and the intriguing concept of boro boro.
In this volume, archaeologist Richard Hodges writes an essay regarding the process of excavation as search for texture, considering the qualities that archaeology and textiles share.
Sudō Reiko is the Design Director of NUNO and is one of Japan’s most influential contemporary textile designers.
