This book is part of a six-book series that follows 20 years of the work by esteemed textile design firm, Nuno, categorized through distinctive themes of onomatopoeias in the Japanese language describing textiles. Each book has a central text explaining the essence of the onomatopoeia and the connection to textiles with an accompanying essay by specialists outside of the textile industry that explores the abstract connections to the larger concepts of the theme. Additionally the book discusses in depth the inspirations, technologies and processes of producing textiles.
FUWA FUWA: Strictly Lightweight Fluff refers to fuwa fuwa, an onomatopoeia expressing the texture usually associated with fluffy. The publication is full of visually striking photographs, zooming into the details of the textiles that express fuwa fuwa exploring the concepts of lightness but also instability and frivolity. The in-depth look into the creative process of designing the textiles shows the inspiration of existing textures such as animal furs and the fuzzy skins of plants that are reflected in the designs. It introduces readers to the experimentation involved in crafting these textiles, including traditional weaving techniques such as the historical Kara-ori weave, derived from Tang dynasty weavings, and the intricate honeycomb weave.
In this volume, dedicated to fuwa fuwa, the essay is about a cat written by the acclaimed author, Murakami Haruki.
