This illustrated volume offers an intimate view of the artistry, philosophy, and life of architect and furniture designer George Nakashima. The book features finely crafted tables, desks, chairs and cabinets made from rare timbers, reflecting his deep respect for natural materials.
Nakashima writes about the grandeur of ancient trees and figured wood, outlining his careful selection of materials. The work expresses his commitment to revealing the inherent character of wood, giving it renewed life as furniture in harmony with nature.
George Nakashima, an American of Japanese descent, described himself as a woodworker rather than a designer. After studying forestry and architecture, he established a workshop in the forests of Pennsylvania, where he created furniture.
During his time in Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture, he became involved with the Sanuki Minguren, a group dedicated to refining and revitalizing heritage folk tools.
