This octagonal porcelain plate is handcrafted by Iyama Mikiko in Tokyo. It has a distinct form and is well-suited for serving dessert or small side dishes.
Born in Tokyo in 1965, Iyama is a ceramicist who developed her interest while working at Sagachō Exhibit Space, a contemporary art venue in Tokyo. She later attended the Seto Ceramic Vocational Training School and established her own practice in 1991. She is currently based in Takao, Tokyo.
Iyama forms her pieces using plaster moulds, with the edges cut and finished by hand. This process introduces a subtle trace of the hand alongside the uniformity of the mould. Her designs explore the distinctive forms and functions of contemporary tableware.
As each piece is handmade, there might be individual differences.
