A selection of photographs from Record (issues 31–50) by Moriyama Daidō.
Published in 2017 as a sequel to Daido Moriyama Record, this volume presents a selection of images and texts from issues 31–50 of Moriyama Daidō’s photographic journal Kiroku – Record.
The works are characterized by fragmentary, intensely composed frames and sharply contrasted imagery, reflecting the distinctive visual language that defines his practice.
Moriyama Daidō was born in Osaka. After working as an assistant to photographer Hosoe Eikoh, he became independent in 1964 and remains active today. His work is characterised by high-contrast imagery and coarse-grained textures, often described by the phrase “are, bure, boke” (rough, blurred, out of focus).
He has held numerous solo exhibitions at major institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain. His honours include the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Chevalier) in 2018 and the Hasselblad Award in 2019.
Mark Holborn is an editor and designer of illustrated books, who has collaborated with numerous artists. He is also a curator, author, and specialist in Japanese culture.
