This playful chopstick rest shaped as a slice of renkon (lotus root) is skilfully crafted by Sumitani Saburō Shōten, a manufacturer of metal crafts established in 1939 in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture.
Designed to elevate the tips of the chopsticks off the tabletop for hygiene, chopstick rests provide a designated resting place for chopsticks at the start and end of a meal.
Takaoka City is celebrated for its metal casting industry, rooted in bronze craftsmanship that began over 400 years ago. This historical skill and knowledge are demonstrated in the detailed form of the tin renkon.
After use, wash with a soft cloth or sponge and neutral detergent.
If the lustre becomes dull, polish with over-the-counter metal polish, toothpaste or baking soda to restore the luster.

Tōhoku consists of six prefectures located in the north-east of Honshu island. This region is known for its hot spring (onsen) resorts, colourful festivals, remote sacred mountains and harsh winters. In 2011, the devastating earthquake and tsunami hit the region hard; however, the massive efforts in reconstruction are proof of the people’s resilience. Urushi (lacquer) ware, ironware and the crafting of kokeshi dolls make up but a few of the local industries in this lesser-visited region of Japan.
