Cedar, or sugi in Japanese, is a popular material used in the creation of sake cups and barrels, lending the liquid its warm, woody scent. These particular cups are produced from a type of cedar grown in Niigata Prefecture known scientifically as ‘hidden Japanese treasure’. Each cup is designed to offer the drinker a smooth, stable feel in the hand, and to enliven the senses with scents of the Japanese woodland. Each individual cup is handmade and showcases the natural grain of the wood, meaning no two are completely identical.

The central Chūbu region is predominantly mountainous, home to the rugged Japan Alps with coasts on both the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean. The region's history has been shaped by its strategic position between the great cities of Kyoto and Tokyo with Nagoya at its heart. Niigata lies to the north while Mt Fuji can be found in the south in Shizuoka Prefecture.
