An exquisite lacquered bowl from Gifu Prefecture, refined with a special transparent urushi.

The Shunkei-nuri lacquerware technique used to make this bowl is a representative craft of Hida Takayama. The bowl is crafted by hollowing out wood from the horse chestnut tree and finishing it with a transparent glaze of urushi (Japanese lacquer tree sap), which enhances the natural beauty of the wood grain. The transparent urushi used for Shunkei-nuri is different from the more common black or vermillion urushi and allows the wood’s inherent charm to shine through. The application of this refined lacquer also produces a slightly different tone of colour and finish for each bowl. This meticulous process results in an exquisite and durable bowl that perfectly represents Hida Takayama’s rich craft heritage.

There might be individual differences as each piece is handmade.
Handwash only.
