A small saucer made of walnut, finished with silver leaf and urushi produced by Urakami Yōsuke, in Zao Town, Miyagi Prefecture.
This small walnut saucer is hand carved by Urakami Yōsuke and finished with silver leaf and urushi (lacquer). Drawing on his experience in a furniture workshop, Urakami brings out the character of each piece of wood and uses silver leaf to highlight its qualities. The silver leaf is vulcanised to produce a smoky, speckled effect, then sealed with urushi.
Born in 1985 in the Gotō Islands, Nagasaki Prefecture, Urakami Yōsuke graduated from Kuwasawa Design School and trained for ten years in a furniture workshop. He established his own practice in 2016 in Zao Town, Miyagi Prefecture.
As each piece is handmade, there might be individual differences.

Tōhoku
Tōhoku consists of six prefectures located in the north-east of Honshu island. This region is known for its hot spring (onsen) resorts, colourful festivals, remote sacred mountains and harsh winters. In 2011, the devastating earthquake and tsunami hit the region hard; however, the massive efforts in reconstruction are proof of the people’s resilience. Urushi (lacquer) ware, ironware and the crafting of kokeshi dolls make up but a few of the local industries in this lesser-visited region of Japan.
