The Sugiwan bowl is shaped and lacquered by hand in Ishikawa Prefecture.
The Sugiwan bowl takes its name from sugi (Japanese cedar) due to its shape which, when turned upside down, resembles the tip of a cedar tree. The bowl’s inner surface is shaped in a gentle curve, in contrast to the outer form which features sleek, straight lines. Lightweight and perfectly sized, it is well suited for serving miso soup or rice.
The bowl’s rounded form and rich expression are achieved through the honkataji technique. This meticulous process involves lacquering cloth around the bowl’s more delicate areas, such as the edges and base. A base coat made from Wajima jinoko (fired diatomaceous earth sourced from Mt. Komine in Wajima City) is then applied and polished, followed by a middle coat and a final topcoat, each polished to a high finish. Over time, the bowl will develop an elegant lustre and enhanced brightness.

Chūbu
The central Chūbu region is predominantly mountainous, home to the rugged Japan Alps with coasts on both the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean. The region's history has been shaped by its strategic position between the great cities of Kyoto and Tokyo with Nagoya at its heart. Niigata lies to the north while Mt Fuji can be found in the south in Shizuoka Prefecture.
