A set consisting of a press mould and bamboo mat to construct makizushi (a type of sushi where rice and fillings are rolled in seaweed) crafted in Nabari City, Mie Prefecture.
This set is the ideal tool for constructing makizushi (a type of sushi where rice and fillings are rolled in seaweed). As the makizushi is created, maintaining an even shape in the roll of sushi can be challenging. However, this set guides the user to neatly shape the makizushi by utilizing the press mould and mat.
The process starts by lining the wooden press with the bamboo mat, followed by placing a sheet of seaweed and a layer of rice inside. The filling is then added on top of the rice, which is covered with the final layer of rice. Next, the lid of the mould is dampened with water and pressed down firmly on the rice. Once compacted, the sushi is removed from the mould and shaped using the bamboo mat.
This versatile set can also be used to create oshizushi (pressed rice and toppings pressed into the mould to form a rectangular block which is cut into smaller pieces).
