This set comprising a pure tin tokkuri, sake flask, and sake cups is made in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture – an area renowned throughout Japan for its metal-casting industry. Said to remove bitterness from sake, tin is particularly suitable for drinks with high acidity making them taste softer on the palate. This set was crafted using an advanced technique known as ‘sand-casting’ where molten metal is poured into an intricately designed sand-mould, and then hand-finished by expert craftspeople using a lathe and various bladed tools.
The central Chūbu region is predominantly mountainous, home to the rugged Japan Alps with coasts on both the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean. The region's history has been shaped by its strategic position between the great cities of Kyoto and Tokyo with Nagoya at its heart. Niigata lies to the north while Mt Fuji can be found in the south in Shizuoka Prefecture.
