漆器椀
An expertly crafted lacquerware bowl from the Yamanaka area of Ishikawa prefecture.
Coated with a fine layer of urushi (Japanese lacquer made from tree sap), this zelkova wooden bowl is made in the Yamanaka lacquerware style that has been passed down since the 16th century. The decorative patterns are created using a woodturning technique called kashokubiki, which is only known by a small number of craftspeople working in the area. The lines are carved onto the surface of the wood using special chisels, then the bowl is coated with a lacquer finish giving it a glossy look and long-lasting protective layer.
Size: H7.1 cm x Ø10.7 cm
The central Chūbu region is predominantly mountainous, home to the rugged Japan Alps with coasts on both the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean. The region's history has been shaped by its strategic position between the great cities of Kyoto and Tokyo with Nagoya at its heart. Niigata lies to the north while Mt Fuji can be found in the south in Shizuoka Prefecture.
