Hida-Takayama is a centre of wooden furniture production in Japan and has a well-established reputation for expert carpentry. The predominantly mountainous area of Hida is densely forested and home to hundreds of tree species. These cutting boards were made of kuri, chestnut wood, just one of the wood types available in the local forests, and show off the wood’s distinctive properties. Each cutting board is carefully handmade and coated with perilla oil to highlight the one-of-a-kind woodgrain of the tree from which it is made.
Chestnut wood is known to be highly resistant to weathering and can be easily bent. It has a light to medium brown colour with a slightly coarse grain and it is often used for door frames, roof beams and furniture.
Handwashing recommended.
Dry thoroughly after washing to prevent mould.

The region's history has been shaped by its strategic position between the great cities of Kyoto and Tokyo with Nagoya at its heart. Niigata lies to the north while Mt Fuji can be found in the south in Shizuoka Prefecture.
