Hand-turned black soup bowls crafted in Yamanaka Onsen area of Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture.
These hand-turned black soup bowls are produced in the Yamanaka Onsen area of Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture, a district renowned for its distinctive lacquerware and highly skilled woodturning. Each bowl is crafted from timber cut vertically, following the natural grain of the tree, allowing the wood to dry with minimal distortion.
The pieces are the result of a collaboration between Japanese designer Ishizaki Ikumi and Gato Mikio, a lacquerware manufacturer specializing in Yamanaka lacquerware. The designs received the Good Design Award in 2016 in recognition of their use of culturally specific symbols, each carrying a distinct meaning expressed through the bowls’ diverse forms, as well as the precision and skill involved in their making.
Kinegata Bowl
Shaped like a mallet, the Kinetaga Bowl references the custom of pounding mochi on celebratory occasions, and is therefore a symbol of celebration.
Tamabuchi Bowl
The Tamabuchi Bowl has a rounded form resembling a kusudama (a celebratory ball filled with confetti), and signifies congratulations.
Tsubogata Bowl
The Tsubogata Bowl follows the form of a jar. Just as jars are used to store and share food and drink, the bowl is a symbol of welcoming.
