This novel follows the life of Irie Fukuyo, a freelance proof reader in her thirties who lives and works largely in isolation, with little regular contact beyond her editor, Hijiri. A chance encounter with Mitsutsuka, a physics teacher, alters her experience of the world and brings painful memories from her past to the surface.
Through this story, author Kawakami Mieko explores themes of loneliness and self-discovery, and the emotional complexity of going beyond the barriers of a carefully constructed life.
Kawakami Mieko is a poet and writer from Osaka. Her work explores the female body, ethics, and issues within contemporary society. She has received several literary awards, including the Akutagawa Prize in 2008 for Breasts and Eggs, the Murasaki Shikibu Prize for Heaven, and the Tanizaki Prize in 2013 for Dreams of Love, etc.
