This tea cup is a tribute to the long-established Japanese pottery-making techniques of Hirashimizu Village, Yamagata Prefecture. Expertly crafted with local iron-rich clay, each cup is carefully formed and coated with a special glaze that blends tones of blue and copper-red. The surface is enhanced with red pine ash during the firing process, producing a stunning matt finish that further adds to its charm. The artisans who make these cups have a deep respect for the region’s pottery-making heritage, which dates back centuries. Each piece is made with a focus on craftsmanship rather than artistry, ensuring that it’s not only a beautiful addition to your tea set but also perfect for everyday use.

Tōhoku consists of six prefectures located in the north-east of Honshu island. This region is known for its hot spring (onsen) resorts, colourful festivals, remote sacred mountains and harsh winters. In 2011, the devastating earthquake and tsunami hit the region hard; however, the massive efforts in reconstruction are proof of the people’s resilience. Urushi (lacquer) ware, ironware and the crafting of kokeshi dolls make up but a few of the local industries in this lesser-visited region of Japan.
