An oval tray skillfully crafted from mōsō bamboo in Kyoto Prefecture.
This tray is skillfully crafted from mōsō bamboo in Kyoto Prefecture. The process begins when the bamboo is harvested in the cold winter months, from November to February. Later, in March, the oil is removed from the bamboo through a steaming process in a specialized kiln and then it is hung to dry in the sun for over a month. When this is complete, the bamboo is carbonized through another steaming process in a high-pressure kiln in order to repel insects and prevent warping. Machines are used to form the basic shape of the tray, then the thickness and curves of the bamboo are refined through hand carving by skilled craftspeople.
The simple, modern style of the oval tray is ideal for practical use, including carrying hot items and organising areas of the home. The carved channels can support stationery items on a desk, keys in the hallway, and small accessories or glasses in the bathroom.
