This set of inkō, ‘pressed incense’, is made using matcha, powdered green tea, as its main ingredient. Moulded into shapes resembling wagashi, Japanese confectionery, these inkō give off their scent when heated rather than burned. The phoenix motifs decorating these inkō symbolise the well-known Phoenix Hall of the Byōdō-in, a Buddhist temple built over 1000 years ago in the city of Uji. The matcha used in the incense also comes from Uji, a city south of Kyoto famous for producing high-quality tea.
