Nanbu Bijin Tokubetsu Junmai is an award-winning sake brewed by Nanbu Bijin Brewery in Ninohe City, Iwate Prefecture. Established in 1902 by the Kuji family—originally soy sauce producers—the brewery crafts this tokubetsu junmai (sake made with rice polished to a ratio of 60% or less, or with a distinctive method or ingredient) using Ginotome rice grown locally and polished to 55%.
Characterised by delicate floral aromas and hints of marshmallow, the sake has a velvety texture with a savoury umami note on the mid-palate. It is best enjoyed slightly chilled or at room temperature.

Tōhoku consists of six prefectures located in the north-east of Honshu island. This region is known for its hot spring (onsen) resorts, colourful festivals, remote sacred mountains and harsh winters. In 2011, the devastating earthquake and tsunami hit the region hard; however, the massive efforts in reconstruction are proof of the people’s resilience. Urushi (lacquer) ware, ironware and the crafting of kokeshi dolls make up but a few of the local industries in this lesser-visited region of Japan.
