Since 1909, the Shimantani Syouryu workshop in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture has specialized in crafting orin, bells and gongs that are used in Buddhist temples. There are only a handful of orin artisans remaining in Japan, three of whom work in this workshop, using a specific hammering technique to shape and tune orin. The Syouryu brand was created in order to use this technique to create everyday items that represent Takaoka City and express the skill of its metalworking artisans.
