This self-supporting ladle, crafted from a combination of nylon and fibreglass, was created with the constraints of limited kitchen space in mind. Designed by Kobayashi Mikiya and manufactured by d+, the tate otama, or ‘standing ladle’ was engineered to stand independently due to its flat outer surface. Its well-balanced material composition allows it to be positioned both upright on the accompanying plate or its side. The curved inner surface ensures that food can still be easily scooped and handled.
The design was awarded the Red Dot Design Award in 2010.
