The Craft of Carpentry: Drawing Life from Japan’s Forests focuses on the range of tools and historical craftsmanship that produce Japan’s temples and shrines. This exhibition celebrates the expertise of the Japanese master carpenters who have developed tools and techniques to harness the extraordinary qualities of wood.
This collection accompanies the exhibition, highlighting woodcraft and the forest through intricately crafted coasters utilizing the technique of kumiko (a woodworking technique of assembling patterns with strips of wood), hand-finished trays from Wajima, Ishikawa Prefecture, an area renowned for woodwork, and distinctive room fragrances reflecting the experience of shinrin-yoku (forest bathing).
